I do not always do this, but when it is a close friend of mine sometimes I just do it without even thinking. I do not think that this is always acceptable to do and I really hate that I do it. If my friend is telling me a story I usually try to finish their sentence in a guessing manner. This is not something that I do all of the time because I know that it is not always respectful. I really only do it when I absolutely know the answer and when it is appropriate. It would be appropriate when my friend is not upset or angry.
I usually only finish my sister's sentences because she is super predictable. She also talks really slow, so I basically have time to intervine between her words.
I only finish someone else's sentence if we are close friends. Me and my best friend tend to think a lot alike and will finish each other's sentences when we feel the same way about something.
If they are struggling with the right word, I finish their sentence so they can stop mumbling about the word they are looking for. That or if they are trying to explain a situation that I am already familiar with, but they continue. I usually get irritated and finish their sentence so they can continue with the conversation.
Sometimes I get impatient when they're trying to find the right word. Other times, I get excited and sometimes chime in with what they're talking about.
When someone is struggling with trying to find the words to complete a sentence, I might try to help. I also might do this to get the conversation to move faster.
I finish sentences out of habit. Especially, if I know the person very well I tend to know what they are going to say anyway. It is still irritating though, and definitely something I need to work on!
Sometimes it seems like it would be easier to finish it for them if they are having trouble coming up with words. It also makes me feel more intelligent.
