I hate going to the grocery store by myself. I always feel a bit awkward. In order to feel less awkward I talk on my cell phone while I am shopping. Sometimes if I am unable to get off of the phone because the other person keeps talking, I will stay on the phone in the grocery line.
What else is there to do while you wait in a long grocery line? I guess you could look at a magazine or at all of the goodies placed in view on the shelves of your line. You can even ponder for awhile about this and that or the other. Then there's unlimited talking via verizon so why not talk to a friend or family memeber that you have been too busy to talk to in a while? It's all about personal choice.
Shopping alone is something that i hate doing. Not only do i hate shopping alone, i hate grocery shopping. I talk to people while i shop and wait in line to try and pass the time. Standing in a grocery store line can sometimes seem forever, so i talk to people to pass the time more quickly.
I talk on the phone in a grocery line because I don't have to be available until I'm literally checking out. If I'm already in a conversation with someone, I will finish the conversation while I'm waiting for the person in front of me to finish. I make sure, however, that I am off when I check out so I can communicate with the cashier.
I sometimes talk on my cell in the line to double check with my hubby that there isnt anything else we need. Sometimes it is to let my hubby know that I am in the line and that I will be home soon. I am not usually on there long. I know how annoying it is to be in line and someone else is on their phone having a loud conversation. I feel it is rude. I am never on the phone when I get up to the cashier.
I tend to segregate myself from the majority of strangers in the grocery store regardless. It oftentimes becomes awkward to converse with those that I know nothing about, unless there is a direct need to. That being said, I rarely get on the phone while in the grocery store unless I need to clarify what I'm getting.
It normally depends on who I'm talking to. If it's someone close to me then I'll stay on the phone with them, but if I'm trying to get rid of them it makes for a really easy excuse to get off the phone. I have to admit that I do feel really awkward while I'm there.
If someone happens to call me, and I'm in a grocery line of course I'll answer the phone, because chances are I'll be bored! I love grocery shopping though, so usually if I'm there I'm in the zone and just getting my shopping done, if I'm on the phone the whole time I'll get sidetracked and forget things, but in the line I'll talk if I'm super bored. I always hang up before I get to the cashier though, because I hate being rude and on the phone when dealing with customer service people!
If I am alone at a grocery store I almost always talk to someone on my cellphone. I believe that it is more of a self esteem thing. I am not confident to face people and walk into a store. I would rather seem "preoccupied," and quickly shop.

I am usually talking on the phone to my roommate to make sure that I do not forget anything.

It's usually only if someone happens to call me for a quick or important conversation. Or to make sure that I'm not forgetting anything that I need.
Because I do not want to ignore someone's call
Most likely when I do this, I was on the call before I even got to the line. I wont hang up the phone just because i am standing in a grocery line.
Because someone called me and I want to make sure it's not my family asking me to grab something else.

I do this because I do not want to ignore somebody's call just because I am in public. Also, if the line is really long, it gives me something to do.
